Cancer Research Flashcards
Describe characteristics of cancer
Uncontrolled proliferation and imbalance of cell division, differentiation, cell survival and apoptosis disrupted as well as invasion and metastasis
Define tumour
Abnormal mass of cells, benign or malignant.
Define cancer
Malignant growth of cells
Define primary and secondary tumour
Primary: tumour at initial site
Secondary: tumour spreads to other tissues
Define carcinogenesis
When a healthy cell is transformed into malignant
Define neoplasia
Formation of tumour possessing significant degree of autonomy
Define anaplasia
Lack of differentiation, seen as mass of pleomorphic primitive cells
Define dysplasia
Abnormality of development, alteration in size, shape and arrangement of adult cells
Define hyperplasia
Enlargement of organ or formation of tumour due to over proliferation
Define hypoplasia
Under development of tissue
Define hypertrophy
Increase in organ size due to increase in cell size without increase in cell number
Define Atrophy

Define Dystrophy
