What is cirrhosis
A progressive disease of the liver characterised by liver cell damage, scarring of liver tissue and abnormal liver architecture & function
What are the 3 stages of cirrhosis
Fatty liver - liver cells replaced with larger fat cells (reversible)
Fibrosis - cell damage, repair can’t keep up and starts producing indigestible Collagen that stays and scars
Cirrhosis - loss of collagen, increasing damage to structure and function loss
What stains are used to detect cirrhosis
Perl’s stain - stains iron (Prussian blue) in tissue that kills cells and is released when cells die
van Giesson’s stain - stains collagen (red) and hepatocytes yellow
What does alcohol do to hepatocytes to cause cirrhosis
