Cancer Flashcards
Poorly differentiated
the tumor cells don’t look like normal cells. They’re disorganized under the microscope and tend to grow and spread faster than grade I tumors (which would be well differentiated)
metastases
travel to other areas of body to form new tumors
Radioresistant
cancer may have partial response or does not respond at all
Radiosensitive
cancer degenerates in response to radiation
High grade
cells tend to grow and spread more quickly than low-grade
Low grade
cells look more like normal cells and tend to grow and spread more slowly than high-grade
Carcinoma
most common. develops from cells that cover a surface (skin) or line a body cavity. Examples: adenocarcinoma of the lung
Sarcoma
arises from connective and supportive tissues. Examples: liposarcoma, osteosarcoma
T2N0M0
staging system, 1.0 and 2.0 mm in thickness of tumor, but has not spread to nodes or other areas of body
Fulguration
malignant tissue is destroyed with an electrocautery instrument
En bloc resection
removal of the tumor and any surrounding organs or tissues that may be involved
Resect
to cut and remove a segment of an organ containing a tumor
