Cancer Flashcards
A tumor. The abnormal, excessive and uncontrollable multiplication of cells with the formation of a mass or new growth of tissue
Neoplasm
Scientific study of tumors
Oncology
A tumor that does not invade it’s surrounding tissue or spread around the body
-Growth by expansion
-No metastasis
-Generally, do not return after surgery
-Do not cause excessive tissue damage or whole body damage
-Resemble tissue of origin and are non fatal
Bengin
A tumor that may invade it’s surrounding tissue or spread around the body
Malignant
How does a pathologist determine cancer cells in the biopsy analysis?
Cancer cells often have abnormal chromosomes and DNA making their nuclei larger and darker
How can malignant tumors spread throughout the body?
Through the blood stream or lymphatic system. They may also invade nearby tissue
How are benign and malignant tumors treated?
Benign: surgically, sometimes radiation therapy or medication
Malignant: chemotherapy, radiation, or other therapy treatments to eliminate cancer cells
What is the recurrence factors for benign and malignant tumors?
Benign: surgically removed so they are easier to control. If they recur, it is likely at the original site
Malignant: can spread so more likely to recur at other parts of the body
Forms in the skin or tissue cells that line the body’s internal organs, such as the kidney or liver
-The most common type of cancer
Carcinoma
Grows in the body’s connective tissue cells. Includes fat, blood vessels, nerves, bones, muscles, deep skin tissue, and cartilage
Sarcoma
A group of abnormal cells that remain in the place where they first formed. They have not spread. These abnormal cells may become cancer and spread into nearby normal tissue.
-Also called stage -
In situ phase
What are the types of benign tumors
-Epithelial
-Connective
-Muscle
-Nervous
A glandular tumor found in the breasts, thyroid glands, and mucous glands of the intestinal tract
epithelial
Adenoma
Grows as a projecting mass on the skin or from an inner mucous membrane.
-Common wart
epithelial
Papilloma
A skin tumor that contains melanin
-Common mole
epithelial
Nevus
