Who is C.D. Howe? and how did he change immigration in Canada during 1947-1953?
-C.D. Howe: Canada’s minister of reconstruction after the war
-> CONTEXT: 1923, immigrations was extremely stricted to those who were not farmers, British or American
-> 1952, C.D. Howe demanded for canada to grow the industry, therefore the Immigration act was passed
how were soilders met when they came back to canada?
-> apploauded at parades
-> however many POCS that fought in the war were found at that they were still not allowed to vote

What was recognized in 1947 for soilders?
-Federal government recognized the injustice of denying the vote to those who fought for Canada
-> 1947: Chinese soilders and any chinese canadians were given the right to vote
how did the government end ww2 differently from ww1? (how did they keep the economy thriving?)
-> gov fear that closing wartime production = lose workers and crash economy
-> therefore, government stared loosening war time production instead of halting it
–> loseened wartime ages and price controls
–> companies were able to produce what industry demanded
–> companies received government funding to repurpose their products (if they created mass amounts of military ones)
–> government made sure soilders integrated into civilian life
–> government sponsered construction project to bring back industry

1) received funding on their return/any saving from victory bonds
2) provided rehilitations programs for the wounded
3) offered free tution or business training
4) made women leave their jobs for service men (however military women were allowed to join the workforce)

-> period of time where there was an increase birthrate of 30% (from 1946-1965)
-> from soilders coming home and women being encouraged to take on more feminine pursuits (“homemaker”)
-> created extremely good economy, because many had to buy things (cars, homes, etc)
–> more jobs
