Urban area
A large built up area made of towns or cities

The standard of living that people experience
Urbanisation
The growth of urban areas (towns or cities) pulling people towards the urban areas to live
Conurbation
A large town or city created by the merging of smaller towns
Eg. Greater Manchester
Rural area
An area of countryside with villages and small settlements
Counter urbanisation
The movement of people away from towns and cities and into rural areas
Migration (voluntary/involuntary)
The movement of people between areas (from choice/forced)
Commuting/commuter
Traveling to work
People who live in one location and work in another place
Suburb/suburban land use
The outskirts of a town or city, characteristically lower density housing and newer industry
Green belt
A designated area of land around an urban area, protected from development and being built on
CBD
(Central business district) of a town or city. Has a large concentration of offices and shops
Inner city
Area surrounding the CBD. Characteristically an area of older, higher density buildings with old factories, warehouses and housing
Redevelopment
Urban improvement scheme that involved demolition and rebuilding
Rehabilitation/ renovation
Urban improvement scheme that involves upgrading of existing buildings
Squatter settlement / shanty town
Parts of towns or cities usually in LEDCs where people live in Los cost, self built houses
“Site and service” schemes
Initiatives that improve housing by providing plots of land with essential services. Settlers then build their own homes
Amenities/facilities
Services provided for people either in their homes or in their locality
Tenure
Type of ownership (eg. Rented or owner occupied)
Owner occupied
Type of housing tenure where residents have bought or are buying their home
Public/private rented
Rented from council/private landlord
Housing association
An organisation given government grants to buy/build or improve housing usually for rent. A higher proportion of tenants are from council lists
Housing type
Classification of housing according to whether it is detached, terraced etc…
Socio-economic group
Classification of people according to their occupation (eg. Professional, manual, skilled)
Services/service provision
Facilities provided for the general public
High/low order shopping centre
Different levels of shopping centre graded accordingly to the size of the catchment area and type of retail outlets
Shopping centre hierarchy
The organisation of shopping into a theoretical ‘pyramid’ according to their size
Shopping goods
Shopping items that can be classified according to whether the are ‘everyday goods’, ‘comparison goods’ or ‘specialised goods’
New town
A new urban settlement developed as a planned community
