Calin: Resting Measures Flashcards
Blood Pressure
Measure of force exerted by blood on arteries
Why is Blood Pressure important?
It is the force that keeps blood circulating continuously between heartbeats
Systolic Blood Pressure
Highest pressure. Pressure in arteries during which myocardiun forces blood into arteries
Diastolic Blood Pressure
When the arteries recoil and pressure drops during the filling phase of the heart
Method used to measure Blood Pressure
Auscultatory method
Blood Pressure Norms
Normal <120/80
Prehypretension 120-139/80-89
Hypertension stage 1 140-159/90-99
Hypertension stage 2 >160/100
Procedure for taking BP
- Sit for 5min
- Left arm rest at heart level
- Feet on the floor
- Wrap cuff around arm above antecubital fossa
- Place stethoscope over brachial artery pulse
- Inflate cuff to 170mmHg
- Release slowly
- 1st beat =SBP
- beats disapear=DBP
- Wait 60sex then repeat
Heart Rate Norms
Bradycardia <60bpm
Normal 60-100
Tachycardia >100bpm
Heart Rate procedure
- Px sit for 5min
- Place tips of fingers on anteriolateral aspect of wrist in line with base of thumb
- Count number of beats in 60sec
Rate Pressure Product(RPP)
Measures oxygen demand of heart
Rate Pressure Product Norms
Normal <8000
Average 8000-10000
High 10000-12000
Dangerous >12000
How do body position and arm position affect blood pressure?
BP generally increases from supine to sitting to standing.
We want the arm at the level of the heart so that it is closely approximated to the level of the right atrium
Anxious Ppl
Higher SBP and decreased or same DBP
Why can blood Pressure not be 0
Pressure is needed to maintain blood flow during resting phase. So even when heart is @resr there is pressure in atrial system due ti elastic recoil
