Calculation Points Flashcards
Density equation
Density = mass/Vol
% yield
Actual yield/ theoretical yield X 100
Atom economy
Mass required products / total mass reactants X 100
What does high ATOM economy mean?
Nearly all or all the atoms of the reactants are in the desired product
Low atom economy?
Not many atoms in product
What is the atom economy if only one product produced?
100%
If there is a smaller mass or vol of a substance used in experiment what happens?
There’s a smaller volume obtained in a titre leading to a larger percentage error
Why is it necessary to recrystallise a product before weighing it?
It purifies them so impurities are removed and only desired product is left- gives an accurate mass of product
Why is water a soluble solvent for recrystallisation?
It’s soluble at high temps but insoluble at low temps
What is a double bond?
Unsaturated hydrocarbon
What is a single bond?
Saturated hydrocarbon
What does the m/z value in mass spec tell us?
The Mr
If there is a reaction involving carboxylic acid and identification of a structure- if the ratio is 1:1 what does this mean?
There will only be one carboxyl group
