For the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth
Necessary for nerve and muscle function
Involved in blood clotting
What are the sources of calcium?
Dairy products - milk, cheese and yoghurt only
Green leafy veg
Nuts, pulses and soya products
Tinned fish with bones eg tinned salmon
What is a deficiency of calcium?
Can reduce peak bone mass which can cause osteoporosis on later life
Rickets in children
Osteomalacia
What are the symptoms for rickets?
Bow legs
Pain in bones
What are the symptoms of osteomalacia?
Severe bone pain (hips)
Muscle weakness
