What if the definition of a caesarean section?
An operative procedure which is carried out under anaesthesia whereby the fetus, placenta and membranes are delivered through an incision made in the abdominal wall and uterus (hayman, 2015)
What are the Classifications of urgency?
- immediate threat to life <30min
- M/F compromise <75mins
- No F/M compromise but needs early delivery
- deliver time to suit woman or staff (NICE 2004)
What are the indications for elective caesarean?

Breech, transverse, oblique Shoulders Prev hx - C/S Placenta preva Preterm? Multiple 3/4th degree tear active herpes cephalopelvic disproportion Maternal chioce - tocophobia
What are the Contraindictations for C/S?
Low lying placenta
What antenatal is given to an ELCS women?
Overall discussion Pre-op assessment informed consent obs- BP, urinalysis, weight Bloods- FBC, group and save Anaesthetic review Discuss intake prior to C/S
Intra care for ELCS?

Pre-op med -antacids (reduces gastric vol) Pre for theatre anaesthetic cath IV abx administered
Which layers are incised during procedure?

What are Post operative obs for C/S woman? and how often?
BP Pulse Resps Temp Lochia Pain 15min/30mins 30mins/2hrs 4hourly
What Hosp postnatal care is given?

Obs Thromphrophylaxis Regular analgesia (diamorphine/opioid nice 2004) Bladder care (12 hours) Skin to Skin BF support Wound assessment and care encouraged to mobilise
What are the risk associated with C/S?
reduced mobility/mortality VTE PPH Hysterectomy Infection
In additional to routine PN care women should be provided with what?
encourage to contiune pain relief- co-codamol, ibuprofen, paracetamol
Wound care- assess signs of infection, change dressing, info
What care should be given to the neonate?
Paed?
thermal care
skin to skin
Breastfeed <1hour/regular intervals
