Cable Tools Flashcards
Snips
Cutting wires and cables
Wire Strippers
For stripping back jackets and caldding from wires, used to create custom serial cables or when necessary to expose the copper core
Telco/Network Crimper
For creating network and phone system cables
For securing the cable connector (Jack) to the cable
8 pin for RJ-45: Ethernet, T-1 (Rj-48c)
2-6 pin for RJ-11: POTS (Plain old telephone system), Analog phone lines
Cable Tester
LED or Digital, Confirms the wiremap, tests continuity of entire cable run
Can determine if straight through or Cross Over cable
TDR
Time Domain Reflectometer, for copper
Identifies the distance of a cable, identifies the distance to a break in cable.
Sends a signal that will reflect back if there’s a break
OTDR
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer, for Fiber Optics
Identifies the distance of a cable, identifies the distance to a break in cable.
Sends a signal that will reflect back if there’s a break
Punch Down Tool
For punching down twisted pair wires into punch blocks, patch panels, and jack
Toner and Probe
- Tone Generator places a tone on a wire or cable so it can be detected
- Probe detects the tone and creates an audible noise when detected
For identifying/finding wires and cable runs
Multimeter
For testing voltage on power outlets and supplies. Used to ensure equipment is receiving proper power supplies
For testing copper wires/pins for continuity and resistance
Cable Certifier
Both copper and fiber certifiers, certifies the cable is within crosstalk specifications, allows for cable certification test reports to be generated
BERT
Bit Error Rate Tester. Tests the quality of signal transmissions across a circuit
Bit Error rate is the number of bit errors per unit of time
Transmits a test pattern
Detects and counts all errors received
Primarily used on long haul WAN circuits
