C9: The Evolution Of The Atmosphere (triple) Flashcards
What were the 3 phases of the atmosphere’s evolution to the way it is today?
- Volcanoes gave out gases like carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrogen, methane and ammonia
- The planet called condensing the water vapour into oceans. Plants and algae could grow using the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
- These plants and algae produced oxygen. Over millions of years the concentration increased and the atmosphere is now 80% nitrogen, 20% oxygen and small amounts of other gases.
What is a carbon footprint?
A measure of the amount of carbon footprint and Other gases release over the life cycle of something. It can be a service, event, product, and basically anything.
What are the problems with particulates in the air?
If inhaled they can get stuck in the lungs causing damage. This can lead to respiratory problems.
When they are suspended in the air they reflect sun light back into space. This causes global dimming.
What are the problems with sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen in the atmosphere?
The gases mix with clouds forming dilute sulphuric and nitric acids. These fall as acid rain. These kill plants and damage buildings and statues.
The gases can also cause respiratory problems if they are breathed in.
