C9 Reactions Of Acids Flashcards
What pH is neutral
pH 7
Difference between acids and alkalis when dissolved in water
- Acids release H+ ions when dissolved in water
- Alkali release OH- ions when dissolved in water
3 methods of finding the pH of a solution
- Use of universal indicator
- Use of phenolphthalein
- Use of a pH prob (MOST ACCURATE as it gives exact pH)
Metals react with acids to form ________ ______ this reaction is called a ________ _________
Metal Salts, Redox reaction
What is a Base used for
Neutralise acids to form water in neutralisation reactions
Describe the steps of crystallisation
1) Put some dilute acid into a flask and heat gently with a Bunsen burner
2) Add a small amount of base and stir
3) Keep adding the base until it doesn’t react (base is in excess)
4) Filter the solution to remove the unreacted base
5) Add the remaining solution to an evaporating dish
6) Leave in an evaporating basin in a warm area to evaporate the water so salt crystals are left behind.
Metal + acid =
Salt + Hydrogen
Metal Hydroxide + acid =
Salt + water
Metal oxide + acid =
Salt + water
Metal carbonate + acid =
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
