C1 The Atom Flashcards
What does the alpha scattering experiment prove
The existence of the nucleus
Who discovered the neutron
James Chadwick
Describe the plum pudding model
Larger circle of positive charge filled with electrons (smaller circles of negative charge)
What happened in the alpha scattering experiment
Alpha particles were fired at a layer of gold foil, some of the alpha particles were reflected backwards however some went through the foil. This proves the existence of the nucleus.
Describe the model after the plum pudding model
Nuclear model - electrons orbit a nucleus but not at set distances
Describe the Electron shell (Bohr) model
Electrons must orbit nucleus at fixed distances called shells.
Calculation for relative atomic mass in terms of isotopes
(Abundance of isotope 1 x Mass of isotope 1) + (Abundance of isotope 2 x Mass of isotope 2)
All divided by 100
