C5 Transition Metals And Nanoparticles Flashcards
Uses of nanoparticules
Healthcare, electronics, cosmetics and chemical catalysts
Issues with using nanoparticles
Could potentially harm ecosystems or be detrimental to peoples health
Why do nanoparticles have very different properties to the bulk of that substance.
They have a high surface area to volume ratio causing them to act differently and have different properties and characteristics
Characteristics of transition metals
- High melting point
- High density
- High strength
- Hard
- Low reactivity
What is useful role can be played by a transition metal in another reaction
Can act as a catalyst to help lower activation energy and therefore energy needed for reactants to react through an alternate reaction pathway
What is unusual about the ions transition metals form
They are able to form different charged ions, for example in iron Fe+2 or Fe+3
How big can fine particles be
100nm - 2500nm in total span
Why could nanoparticles damage ecosystems
- Could harm animals by getting into digestive systems accidentally as animals cannot see them
- Could get into food chains
- Hard to remove from ecosystems as they are not visible to human eyes
