c6.1.2 making fertilisers Flashcards
1
Q
what are the main 3 elements plant need
A
nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
2
Q
how to make potassium sulfate
A
- place dilute potassium hydroxide solution into a conical flask with some drops of phenolphthalein indicator
- add dilute sulfuric acid from a burette until the indicator changes to colorless
- add activated charcoal, and this should attract all the indicator
- filter out the charcoal
- warm the filtrate to evaporate the water, leaving potassium sulfate behind. DO NOT DRY TO DRYNESS
3
Q
how to make ammonia sulfate
A
- place the dilute ammonia solution in a conical flask with some methyl orange indicator.
- add dilute sulfuric acid from a burette until the indicator changes to red
- when you reach the end-point, add some extra ammonia solution to ensure that the reaction is complete.
- any extra ammonia solution will be removed through evaporation
AMMONIA GIVES A VERY SHARP SMELL SO BE CAREFUL
4
Q
symptoms of nitrogen deficiency
A
poor growth, yellow leaves
5
Q
symptoms of phosphorus deficiency
A
poor root growth, discoloured leaves
6
Q
symptoms of potassium deficiency
A
poor fruit growth, discoloured leaves.
