C6 - Chemical change Flashcards
Alkali
Base that dissolves in water
Strong acids are..
Better electrical conductors than weak acids
metal+acid=
salt+hydrogen
acid + metal oxide=
salt + water
Common salts soluble?
Yes
Nitrates soluble?
Yes
Common chlorides soluble?
Yes (apart from silver chloride and lead chloride)
Common sulfates soluble?
Yes (exempt lead, barium and calcium sulfate )
Common carbonates and hydroxides soluble?
No (expet for sodium, potassium and ammonium ones)
Making insoluble salts
Precipitation reaction with two soluble salts
Making soluble salts using an acid and an insoluble reactant
acid plus metal or insoluble base
Heat gently to evaporate water and crystallise the salt
Making soluble salts using an acid and a soluble reactant
acid and exactly the right amount of alkali (soluble base)
eg sodium, potassium or ammonium hydroxides
(can’t tell when finished)
carry out titration to find exact volume
Examples of redox reactions
Chlorine gas and iron(II) salt (green to yellow as iron oxidised, chlorine oxidising agent, chlorine reduced)
Iron and dilute acid (iron oxidised to iron2+ and hydrogen reduced)
When do metals rust?
iron is in contact with both oxygen and water
What is rust a form of?
hydrated iron (III) oxide
