B3- Nerves, hormones and homeostasis Flashcards
Sensory neuron
Receptors to CNS
Relay neuron
sensory to motor neuron
Motor neuron
CNS to effector
CNS
Brain and spinal cord
Effectors
muscles and glands
Whats the route of a reflex called?
Reflex arc
How does ecstasy work?
block sites in synapses where seratonin is removed
(affects pain, agressions, appetite and mood)
concentration increases
Role of kidneys
remove urea from blood
adjust ions in blood
adjust water content of blood
What are nephrons?
filtrations units in the kidneys
Ultrafiltration in kidney
water, urea, ions and sugar go into bowman’s capsule
membranes between vessels and bowman’s capsule act like filters
Reabsorption in the kidney
useful substances absorbed back into the blood
eg sugar and sufficient ions by active transport
water
Release of wastes in kidney
come out of nephron into the ureter and down to bladder
What is the concentration of urine controlled by?
ADH from pituitary gland = more= more water absorption
What does alcohol do to ADH?
Suppresses its production, kidneys absorb less water
