C5.5 - Salts From Insoluble Bases (Finished) Flashcards
What are bases?
Compounds that can neutralise acids (pH greater than 7)
What are alkalis?
Bases that are soluble in water
What is the general formula for a reaction between an acid and a base?
Acid + base -> salt + water
What type of reaction is the reaction between an acid and base?
Neutralisation reaction
What is produced when an acid and metal carbonate react?
Salt, water and carbon dioxide
Metal carbonates are also ___
Bases
What are salts made up of?
Mositive metal ions and a negative ion from an acid
Why can you work out the formula of a salt knowing it’s ions?
Salts have no overall charge (as all ionic compounds) so once you know the charges of the ions that make up the salts you can work out its formula
Make a balanced equation for the reaction between sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and the insoluble base copper (II) oxide (CuO)
H2SO4 (aq) + CuO (s) -> CuSo4 (aq) + H2O (l)
How would you make a soluble salt using an insoluble base?
1) Gently warm the dilute acid with a Bunsen Burner
2) Add the insoluble base to the acid a bit at a time till it is neutralised (the excess solid just sinks even after stirring)
3) Filter out the excess solid with a filter paper, funnel, flask to get the salt solution
4) do crystalization
