Watershed
The 9.pm deadline before which programs that contain a certain level of violence or sex cannot be broadcast
Censorship
preventing information from being circulated in some way. Can be applied to speech, written material, and films.
Why is information censored?
1) Some people may find it offensive/ harmful to others
2) too sensitive/ private in some way
Moral censorship
deciding what material is suitable for broadcasting or publishing and what material is not considered moral or suitable
The BBFC
The British Board of Film Classification. Set up by film industry to monitor films. Film censors view films and categorize them into suitable age groups
U-film censorship guidelines:
1) suitable for kids from the age of 4
2) a reassuring and non-frightening framework
3) handles themes sensitively, no bad language
4) some kissing acceptable
5) some nudity acceptable if not sexual content
6) mild violence okay- no emphasis on realistic weapons or behavior dangerous for kids to copy
7) mild horror with reassuring outcomes acceptable
8) no reference to illegal drugs
An 18 categorization film
You have to be 18 to see, rent or buy the film. There are some exceptions, e.g when sex material is informative and educational
Authoritarian
A style of government where society’s members have little input and have to accept government’s decisions
Paternalistic
A style of government where its decisions are made for the good of everybody else. Rests on idea that head of household knows best for the rest of household
