C3b3 Educational psychology and anger managment Flashcards
Ed psychs and helping children with anger management problems
Ed psychs can deal with cases involving anger management. There is often an incident that draws in the ed psych, or several before advice is sought. A disruptive child is extremely hard to deal with, and they will not be learning if they are aroused. Other childen and the teacher are to be affected as well
Dealing with anger management and ed psychs
1) observation
2) Gathering as much info as possible
3) Helping to solve the problem
4) (potentially) needing further diagnosis
Anger management: ed psych and observing
ed psych goes to classroom to watch child/ see what triggers behaviour/ looks for patterns
Teacher asked to observe and keep records (often given a form to help them know what to record)
Ed psychs need to know about environment and situation often before any incident
Aim: to try and find out what causes anger and how/ why it occurs
Anger management: ed psych and gathering info
Ed psych needs to gather specific info about situation, and whether child reacts the same way in other places
Parents invited to school to discuss issues, ed psych visits home to make observations
Parents asked questions about child’s inappropriate behaviour
Ed psych tries to establish patterns
Tells teacher to note whether there is particular time of day, type of environment when problmes occur- many aspects can trigger the behaviour
Teacher asked whether they can tell straight awat what day they’ll have with the child
Ed psych talks to child
Anger management: ed psych and helping solve the problem
Can help teacher identify when an incident is going to happen, can help stop problem before they start
Teacher keeps record of what happens in day in relation to child; can help them identify signs before an outburst
Teacher needs to acknowledge child; if they feel supported, this might stop an outburst
Ed psych helps child identify when incident may happen. The child (depending on age) can learn what feelings come before an outburst, and after understanding, can be taught techniques to calm themself down, e.g relaxation techniques.
Anger management: ed psych and further diagnosis
If Ed psych feels that child has a more serious mental health problem, e.g ADHD, they will ensure child is referred to another agency/ specialist
