C4 Torrefaction of Biomass Flashcards
1
Q
concept torrefaction
A
biomass → torrefaction (remove hemicellulose) → torrified biomass (lignin + cellulose) + other product (liquid, solid, gas)
temp= 200-300 °C, cannot exceed 300°C
2
Q
objective torrefaction
A
- remove hemicellulose via thermal degradation of biopolymer
- ↑ C content, ↓ O & H content
- produce lighter structure- easy to transport
3
Q
why 200-300 °C, cannot exceed 300°C
A
- hemicellulose degrade at 225-300 °C
- cellulose degrade at 305-375 °C
- lignin degrade at 250-500 °C
4
Q
parameter affecting torrefaction
4 types
A
- temperature
- residence time
- biomass type
- feed size
5
Q
parameter affecting torrefaction
temperature
A
↑ temp, ↓ torrified biomass yeild, (more cellulose + lignin)
6
Q
parameter affecting torrefaction
residence time
A
↓ heating rate, ↑ residence time, ↓ mass yeild, ↑ energy density
7
Q
parameter affecting torrefaction
biomass type
A
- biomass with ↑ hemicellulose degrade faster
- xylan influence torrefaction - ↑ reactive, degrade faster
8
Q
degree of torrefaction
3 degrees
A
- light torrefation (T=200-240), only hemicellulose degrade
- medium torrefaction (T=240-260) hemicellulose degrade, cellulose mildly affacted
- severe torrefaction (T=260-300) hemicellulose, cellulose, liginin degrade forming char
9
Q
physical properties of torrified biomass
A
- density
- grindability
- hydrophobicity
- explosion potential of torrified dust
- densification & pallestitation
