C3.3.5 - Hydrogen Ions And The pH Flashcards
What does a solution consist of?
A salute dissolved in a solvent
If there is a lot of solute in a solution, is the concentration high or low?
High
If there is not a lot of solute in a solution, is the concentration high or low?
Low
What is a dilute acid?
An acid which has a low ratio of acid to volume of solution
What is a concentrated acid?
An acid with a high ratio of acid to volume of solution
What is a strong acid?
An acid where all of its molecules release H+ ions (fully ionised)
What is a weak acid?
An acid where only a partial amount of their molecules release H+ ions (partially ionised)
Give an example of a weak acid.
Ethanoic acid
Give an example of a strong acid.
Nitric acid
In an aqueous solution, what happens to the pH if the concentration increases by a factor of 10?
It decreases by 1
At the same concentration, does a strong acid or a weak acid have a lower pH?
Strong acid
What graph shows the effect on pH changing compared to the volume of solution?
The pH titration curve
