C2.3.3 - Bulk Properties of Materials Flashcards
What does ‘brittle’ mean?
Hard but liable to break
What happens when an external force is applied to a brittle substance?
It cracks or breaks
What happens when an external force is applied to a malleable substance?
It changes shape without cracking / breaking
What does ‘malleable’ mean?
Something that can change shape without breaking or cracking
Are metals malleable or brittle?
Malleable
What happens to metal ions when an external force is applied to them?
The layers of metal ions slide over each other
Why are no bonds broken when an external force is applied to a metal?
The delocalised electrons are already free to move
What differences are there between brittle substance particles and malleable substance particles?
The particles in a malleable substances can change their positions in their specific structure easier
What can happen if a large enough force is applied to a giant covalent structure?
Many covalent bonds may break at once and cause the substance to snap
How strong are the intermolecular forces that attract simple and polymer molecules?
Weak (easily breakable)
If a solid is easily breakable and a lattice, what word would you use to describe it?
Brittle
How can a substance conduct electricity?
If it has charged particles that are free to move
In which states can metals conduct electricity?
Solid and Liquid
Why can simple molecules, most polymer molecules and giant covalent structures not conduct electricity?
They do not have delocalised electrons
When can ionic compounds conduct electricity?
When molten or in solution
