C3.3.2 - The pH Scale Flashcards
What is an acid?
An acid is a substance that releases Hydrogen ions (H+,aq) when dissolved in water
What is formed when acid is dissolved in water?
An aqueous solution
What is a base?
A substance that can neutralise acids
What is an alkali?
A base which can dissolve into water
What does alkali release when dissolved in water?
OH- ions
What pH do acids have?
pH < 7
What pH do alkaline have?
pH > 7
What pH is neutral?
7
What can you use to show the pH of a solution?
Universal indicator, pH meter
Write a method on how you would measure pH using a pH meter.
1) Wash the pH with probe with water, and then put it into the calibration buffer.
2) Adjust the reading to match the pH of the buffer solution
3) Wash the pH meter with water
4) Place the pH meter into the solution and then take the reading
