C3.1.1 - Formulae Of Elements And Molecules Flashcards
What does the Periodic Table show you?
The names of elements, the chemical symbols for their atoms, their atomic number and their relative atomic mass
Describe how you would write a chemical symbol?
Each chemical symbol has 1, 2, or 3 letters, and starts with a capital letter and is followed with letters in lowercase
Why are the formulae for metal elements always written as empirical formulae?
As they are giant metallic lattices, which means the number of atoms would be immense
What are diatomic molecules?
The non-metal elements in Group 7(IUPAC Group 17) which are attracted together due to intermolecular forces
What does a diatomic molecule contain?
2 atoms covalently bonded together (having a subscipt 2)
What diatomic molecules do not have are not in Group 7?
Hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen
What is the empirical formula for sulfur?
S8
What is the empirical formula for phosphurus?
P4
What does the molecular formula for a simple covalent compound show?
The symbols for each element it contains and the number of atoms of each element in one of its molecules
