C2.2.2 - Electronic Structures Flashcards
What is the special name for a row in the Periodic Table?
Period
What is the special name for a column in the Periodic Table?
IUPAC group (or just group)
Why are the groups and periods numbered?
To help identify them
What are the similarities between elements in the same group?
They have similar chemical properties
Why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
The arrangement of their electrons
What does the electronic structure of an atom show?
How the electrons are arranged in all atoms
What is the outermost occupied shell in an atom called?
The outer shell
How do you write the electronic structure of an atom?
You start by counting the amount of electrons on the outer shell, then a period, and then to the next outer shell and so on.
What is the maximum number of electrons on the first shell?
2
What is the maximum number of electrons on the second and third shells?
8
What is the maximum number of electrons on the fourth shell?
18
How does the last number of an electronic structure link to the Periodic Table?
It equals the group number. However, atoms of IUPAC group 18 have full outer shells
How does the amount of numbers in an electronic structure relate to the Periodic Table?
It equals the period number
How does the sum of the numbers in an electronic structure relate to the Periodic Table?
It equals the atomic number
What is an IUPAC group?
The new way to name groups in the Periodic Table
