C3 - Water Quality Flashcards
Where is water stored before cleaning?
In reservoirs with a clean water supply.
What are the stages of cleaning water?
1) mesh screening to remove big objects.
2) adding chemicals so the microbes stick together & sink.
3) filtering via gravel beds to remove solids.
4) chlorination to kill microbes.
What do carbon water filters do?
Remove the chlorine taste.
What do silver water filters do?
Kill bugs.
What is distillation of water?
Boiling water then condensing it.
Why is distillation of water used?
It produces pure water.
Where is water distillation used and why isn’t it used everywhere?
It is used in labs.
It’s too expensive to use all the time.
What is chemical is added to water after cleaning and why?
Fluorine, to reduce tooth decay.
What can high doses of fluorine in water cause? [2]
Cancer & bone problems.
Why don’t some people agree with adding fluorine to water and what could be used as an alternative?
They don’t agree with ‘mass medication’.
You could use fluoride toothpaste.
What are two negatives about adding chlorine to water? [2]
It can react with substances to produce toxic by-products.
Studies have linked it to cancer increase.
What are the dangers of dirty water?
Poisonous salts & microbes can cause disease.
