C3 - Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What does a carboxylic acid end in?
‘anoic acid’.
What do carboxylic acids react with carbonates to produce?
CO2 & and a salt ending in ‘anoate’.
What happens when you dissolve a carboxylic acid in water?
An acidic solution is formed.
Why is an acidic solution formed when you dissolve carboxylic acids in water?
It ionises and releases H+ ions, but doesn’t ionise fully so a weak solution with a higher pH is formed.
What is the use of carboxylic acid regarding ethanol?
It oxidises ethanol to produce ethanoic acid.
What can useful substance you produce when you dissolve a carboxylic acid in water?
Vinegar for flavouring and preserving food.
What are the sources of citric acid?
Oranges & lemons.
What are the uses of citric acid? [2]
Fizzy drinks.
To get rid of scale.
What do longer chains of carboxylic acids tend to be?
Soaps & detergents.
What is ethanoic acid good for?
Using as a solvent.
What is the functional group of a carboxylic acid?
COOH.
