C2 - Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What are ions?
Charged particles that react with anything with opposite charge.
What is an ionic compound?
A giant ionic lattice.
Give an example of an ionic compound.
Sodium chloride (salt).
Describe the structure of an ionic compound.
Regular with strong electrostatic forces of attraction in all directions.
What is the melting/boiling point of an ionic compound like and why?
High because the ions are strongly attracted to one another.
What happens to the ions when ionic compounds melt?
The ions move freely & carry current.
What happens to an ionic compound in water?
It dissolves easily.
The ions separate and move freely.
What happens during ionic bonding?
The atoms gain or lose and electron to form an ion.
