C3 - Group 7: The Halogens Flashcards
Why do Group 7 elements become less reactive as you go down?
It gets harder to gain an electron because the outer shell is further from the nucleus.
What properties do the halogens have as you go further down the Group?
Higher melting/boiling point.
What is fluorine and how reactive is it?
It is a poisonous yellow gas.
It is very reactive.
What is chlorine and how reactive is it?
It is a poisonous dense green gas.
It is fairly reactive.
What is bromine?
A dense, poisonous, red-brown volatile liquid.
What is iodine?
A dark grey solid or purple vapour.
What do halogens exist as?
Molecules which are pairs of atoms.
What bond do halogens form with metals?
Ionic bonds.
What ions do halogens form when bonding with metals, and what are they called?
1- ions called halides.
What happens as you go down Group 7?
The elements become less reactive.
