C3 Questions I got wrong Flashcards
Why are alloys harder then pure metal?
Because the atoms are different sizes so there are no rows/layers to slide over.
What charge does the ionic bonding of potassium and sulphur give them?
It gives the potassium a +1 charge and the sodium a -2 charge.
Why is the ball and stick model not a true representation of the structure of potassium sulphide?
Because in potassium sulphide there are no sticks connecting them together but electrostatic forces.
Why do covalent compounds have low melting points?
Because there are weak intermolecular forces of attraction.
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten?
Because ions are free to move.
Why is nitrogen a gas at room temperature?
Because there are weak intermolecular forces, needing little energy to overcome.
How many covalent bonds can carbon atoms form?
They can form up to 4 covalent bonds.
Why are buckyballs good lubricants?
Because they can roll and are spherical.
