C3 Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What groups can consumers by classified as?
-Primary consumers: first eater of plants and other producers (herbivore)
-secondary consumers: eats primary consumers
-tertiary consumers: eat secondary consumers
-decomposers: eat waste, return organic and inorganic nutrients to the Earth that can be used again by producers
What is ATP (adenosine triphosphate)?
-Useable form of chemical energy
-composed of 5 carbon sugar (ribose), a nitrogen base (adenine), and 3 phosphate molecules
-when energy is required enzymes can extract a phosphate from ATP
-a new products is formed called ADP (adenosine diphosphate): has 2 phosphate molecules and less energy then ATP
-ATP supplies are replenished by phosphorylation which is the addition of a phosphate molecule
What is cellular respiration?
-The oxidation of glucose to produce ATP
- each time a hydrogen and electron is removed energy is released
-3 pathways for energy release
What is oxidation and reduction?
-Oxidation: occurs when an atom or molecule loses an electron (and hydrogen)
-reduction: occurs when an atom or molecule gains an electron (and hydrogen)
What is the most usable source of energy for animals and plants?
-In animals: carbohydrates followed by glycogen, (multiple glucose units), fats then proteins
-in plants: starches then monosaccharides
What are the 3 pathways for energy release in cellular respiration?
- Aerobic respiration (with oxygen)
- Anaerobic respiration (without oxygen)
- Fermentation
