C2 Photosynthesis Review Flashcards
During photosynthesis what to plants convert light energy into?
-During photosynthesis plants convert light energy into chemical energy (glucose)
What are the 2 components that photosynthesis is broken down into?
- Light dependant reactions: splits water and forms ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
- Carbon fixation (light independant reactions) (Calvin-Bensen cycle): glucose is made
What are chloroplasts?
-Site of photosynthesis
-have an inner and outer membrane
What is the stroma?
-Fluid in the inner space of chloroplasts
-contains proteins and other chemicals used in the synthesis of carbohydrates (light dependant reactions in the thylakoid)
-light independent reactions happen in the stroma
What is the thylakoid (membrane)?
-Flattened membrane sacs
-organized into stacks called grana or granum
-contain pigments which absorb light energy
-there are different photosynthetic pigments
What is chlorophyll?
-Pigment that makes plants green
-main photosynthetic pigment in plants
-plants are green because chlorophyll reflects green wavelengths of light and absorb red and blue wavelengths
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
-6H2O + 6CO2 —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is carotenoids?
-Present in carrots
-absorb violet and blue wavelengths but reflect yellow and orange
-the different pigments absorb the wavelengths of light that provide the right amount of energy to the electrons within them
What is photolysis?
-The process where water is split by light energy to produce hydrogen ions, oxygen atoms, and electrons
-O2 is a waste product of this process and is released by the plant
