what happened on the 14th May
on the 14th May, the first bus arrived at the station in Anniston. the freedom riders were met by an angry crowd
who lead the angry mob
the angry mob was lead by the KKK leader William Chappel
what did they do to the bus
they attacked the bus smashing in windows and slashing tyres
what did the police do upon arrival
the police cleared a path for the bus to leave to the outskirts of the city but then left leaving the bus to the mob that had followed behind
what did the mob do after the police left
the mob threw a fire bomb through one of the windows followed by the mob holding the doors shut as the fire and smoke spread
what allowed the passengers to escape
the fire was nearing the petrol tank, fearing an explosion the mob left allowing the riders to evacuate
what happened to the second bus
the second bus was also attacked. the passengers were dragged off the bus and beaten up but they were determined to complete their journey
what happened when the second bus got to Montgomery
they were met by klansmen and were beaten up again
who was the police chief and what did he order
The police chief was known as Bull Connor and ordered the police to do nothing
