( C2 ) The Significance of the 1957 Civil Rights Act Flashcards
what was the initial impact like of the Act
there was little immediate impact
How did the act focus on trying to improve the number of African American voters
1) Setting up US comissions on civil rights which began investigating how blacks were prevented from voting
2) Allowing federal courts to prosecute states who tried to stop blacks from voting
how was the allowance of prosecuting states not particularly strong
it wasn’t particularly strong as juries -often racist- opposed the CRM and were likely to give not guilty verdicts
why was the act a huge first step though
it was the first time in 82 years that the federal government had acted to try and improve the civil rights of blacks in law
what did the the act show
the act showed that congress was at least willing to do something about the current US state
who was the president when the act was signed
Eisenhower
why were the blacks not satisfied with the outcome of the act
as it didn’t go as far as they wanted it to and became even more determined to press for reformation
what’s considered the most important result of the 1957 ACT
it was that congress passed another civil rights act in 1960
why was the act of 1960 following the 57 act important
as it introduced federal inspections of the process used by state governors to register voters and awarding penalties for those states found to be obstructing their right to vote
what was the percent increase of African American registered voters
the 2 Acts only increase the registered black voters by 3%
why was the 1957 act weakened
the 1957 Act was weakened due to resilience from the Dixiecrats but because of the work of the democratic senate Lyndon Johnson the bill was passed
