C2.1 - Periodic table Flashcards
What does the stepped line tell us on the periodic table?
Which side has metals and which side has non-metals.

Name 3 properties of a metal.
good conductor of electricity good conductor of heat shiny high density (heavy) malleable (hammer it into different shapes) ductile (pulled into wires) sonorous (ringing sound when hit)
Name 3 properties of a non-metal.
poor conductor of electricity poor conductor of heat dull low density (light) brittle not sonorous
What are the elements called that are near the stepped line?
Metalloids
What are the vertical columns called in the periodic table?
What are the horizontal columns called in the periodic table?
Groups
Periods
Group 1 - The alkali metals
What is one chemical property of the group 1 elements.
They are very reactive. This means that they take part easily in chemical reactions.
Do reactions get more or less vigorous when going down group 1?
It becomes more vigorous.
Do the melting points increase or decrease while moving down group 1.
They decrease.
Group 7 - The halogens
Does the reactivity increase or decrease whilst moving down this group?
The reactivity decreases.
Does the boiling points of group 7 increase or decrease while moving down the group.
The boiling point increases.
What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction is when a more reactive element displaces, or pushes out, a less reactive element from its compound.
Group 0 -
Are the noble gases reactive or unreactive?
They are unreactive.
