What is the method for testing for starch? What colour will the solution be is there is starch?
You add a few drops of IODINE to the food solution. If the solution turns a DARK BLUE colour then there is starch in the food.
What is the method for testing for lipids? What will the colour be of the solution if there are lipids?
First add a few drops of ETHANOL to the food solution and then shake the test tube. Leave it for 1 minute. Pour the ethanol into a test tube filled with water. If the water turns a CLOUDY MILK colour then there are lipids in the food.
What is the method for testing for sugar? What colour will the solution be if there is sugar?
Add a few drops of BENEDIC’S solution to the food solution. Heat the test tube in a hot bath for a couple minutes. If the colour of the solution turns an ORANGE-RED then there is sugar in the food.
What is the method for testing for protein? What will the colour of the solution be if there is protein?
Add a few drops of Biuret reagent solution. If the solution turns purple there is protein on the food.
What is a mineral or vitamin deficiency?
It is where someone does not get enough minerals or vitamins.
How does food pass into the bloodstream during digestion?
Through the walls of the small intestine. Villi are small structures found there that give a large surface area meaning more food molecules can be absorbed.
What are digestive enzymes?
Digestive enzymes are found in digestive juices; these are special proteins that break down large molecules of nutrients into smaller molecules. There are known as biological catalysts - they speed up digestion without being used up.
What is meant by a drug?
Drugs are chemical substances that affects the way you body works.
Withdrawal symptoms are symptoms that might occur after a person with an addiction stops taking the drug.
Name three withdrawal symptoms.
