B2.3 - Adaptation and inheritance Flashcards
What do animals compete for?
Water
Food
Space
Mates/Partners
What do plants compete for?
Water
Light
Space
Minerals
What is meant by adaptations?
They are characteristics that lets an organism become successful and survive.
How can animals adapt to the winter?
Hibernation - sleeping through the winter
Migration - moving somewhere warmer. E.g birds
Growing thicker fur - keeping warm with thicker fur
What is interdependence?
Interdependence is when animals rely and affect each other.
What is variation?
Differences in characteristics.
What do species have in common?
Characteristics.
What is discontinuous variation and continuous variation?
Discontinuous variation - result in certain values. E.g. blood types or gender.
Continuous variation - result in any value within a range. E.g height
What graph would you use for continuous variation and discontinuous variation?
Continuous - histogram

Discontinuous - bar chart

What is DNA?
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) - contains all information needed to make an organism.
What is a chromosome?
Chromosomes are long strands of DNA that are found in a nucleus. Humans have 46, 23 are from your father and 23 are from your mother.
What are genes?
Genes are sections of chromosomes.
What is natural selection?
Natural selection is the process of organisms evolving. Organisms with better adaptations will survive and reproduce having offspring that have similar adaptations.
