C2 2 Structure and Properties Flashcards
What does a giant ionic lattice require to break it apart? What does this mean?
A lot of energy
Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points.
What is every ionic compound?
A giant structure
Why can’t a solid ionic compound conduct electricity?
As all its ions are held in fixed positions.
Why can a liquid conduct electricity?
As the ions are free to move anywhere.
What can many ionic compounds do?
Dissolve in water
What happens when an ionic compound gets dissolved in water?
The lattice gets split up by water molecules, the ions are then free to move around. Therefore they can conduct electricity and can move to an oppositely charged electrode.
What state are all ionic compounds at, at room temperature?
Solid
When does a structure have a high melting point?
When the bonds require a high amount of energy to break them apart - when they’re strong
What are most covalently bonded substances known as?
Simple molecules
