2
Q

Why is distillation used to separate the substances in crude oil?

A

As the properties of the substances do not change when they are mixed. It can be used to separate mixtures with different boiling points.

3
Q

Briefly explain the process of distillation in crude oil.

A

The crude oil mixture is heated so that it boils. The different fractions vaporise in different temperatures and we collect the vapours by cooling and condensing them.

9
Q

What can alkanes be described as? What does this mean?

15
Q

What is meant by flammability?

A

How easily it burns.

16
Q

What is the full name for the process in separating crude oil?

A

Fractional distillation

17
Q

Where are high boiling and low boing point liquids in the fractional distillation column?

A

Low at the top (further away from fire) and viseversa

18
Q

Why are smaller chains of hydrocarbons more useful?

A

They burn and ignite more easily. They are also clean.

19
Q

What is oxidation?

A

Adding oxygen in a chemical reaction where oxides are formed.

20
Q

What is formed when a hydrocarbon is burned?

A

Carbon dioxide and water

21
Q

What do fuels also contain?

A

Impurities containing sulphur .

22
Q

Why is sulphur bad for the environment?

A

It forms sulphur dioxide when reacted with the oxygen. This causes acid rain and engine corrosion.

23
Q

What extra product is formed in incomplete combustion?

A

Carbon monoxide

24
Q

Why is carbon monoxide badly or you?

A

The red blood cells can carry these instead of oxygen.

25
Q

What else can be formed?

A

Nitrogen oxides
