C1.3 Flashcards
What does hydrochloric acid in the stomach do?
Help digestion and kill bacteria
What do indigestion remedies do?
they neutralise excess stomach acids
What are acids normally neutralised by?
metal oxides, hydroxides and carbonates
Acid + metal oxide ??
salt + water
Acid + metal hydroxide ??
salt + water
Acid + metal carbonate ??
salt + water + carbon dioxide
Salt names of
Hydrochloric?
Sulphuric?
Nitric?
Chloride
sulphate
nitrates
What is electrolysis?
The decomposition of an ionic compound using a direct current.
Electrolysis of Hydrochloric acid products?
Hydrogen + Chlorine
Explanation of Electrolysis?
Attach wire to both carbon rods. put wire into DC.
Test tube over both rods to catch gas
elements will be attracted to opposite charged rods
bubble into test tube
Test for hydrogen?
Hold lighted splint in test tube and it will pop
Test for chlorine?
Damp blue litmus paper turns red and then bleaches white
Chemical test for oxygen?
light a splint, blow out so still glowing. will relight in test tube of oxygen
