C1.1 Flashcards
How was the early atmosphere formed?
Gases escaped from volcanoes
What did the early atmosphere contain?
Very little oxygen
large amounts of carbon dioxide and water vapour
Why is it difficult for scientists to investigate early atmosphere gases?
No humans around at this time so nothing could be measured, evidence can come to many different conclusions
How were oceans formed?
Water vapour condensed
How did CO2 levels falls?
Dissolved into oceans, some sea animals took in CO2 to make their shells.
How did oxygen levels increase?
More plants photosynthesising gave out oxygen
Current atmosphere gases?
78% nitrogen 21% oxygen 1% argon 0.03% carbon dioxide
What causes changes in the atmosphere?
Volcanoes erupt - releasing CO2
Burning fossil fuels - Releases C02
Deforestation- amount of C02 being taken in is reduces
Farming - more cows increase methane
What’s the word equation of photosynthesis?
CO2 + water = glucose + oxygen
