Acknowledgement of free will
An assumption of the positive approach that believes that humans are in charge of their own emotions, thoughts and behaviour.
Authenticity of goodness and excellence
An assumption of the positive approach which states that feelings of happiness are as natural as feelings of anxiety and stress and that we should assign these positive states of mind as equally as important.
Focus on ‘The Good Life’
An assumption of the positive approach that focuses on those factors that contribute most to a well-lived life.
The pleasant life
Happiness comes from pursuing positive emotions in relation to the past, present and future.
The meaningful life
Happiness comes from a deep sense of fulfilment by living for a purpose much greater than oneself
The good life
Happiness comes from pursuing activities that positively absorb and engage us.
Mindfulness
Has its roots in ancient Buddhist practice and teaches people to control their thoughts and behaviours by paying attention to, and increasing awareness of their present surroundings.
Meditation
Usually learned through a mixture of guided instruction and personal practice which helps them accept their thought are impermanent and come and go
