C1 - Chemical Equations Flashcards
What is one way to show a chemical reaction? (1)
A word equation
(even though it is not as quick as using chemical symbols)
What are reactants?
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
What are products?
The result formed after a chemical reaction
What is another way to show a chemical reaction? (2)
Symbol equations
(shorthand only showing the symbols or formulas of the reactants and products)
What do symbol equations always need to be?
They always need to be balanced on BOTH sides
How do you balance equations?
By putting numbers in front of the formulas where needed
(For example H2SO4 + NaOH = Na2SO4 + H2O is not balanced so you put numbers in front of the formulas where needed
H2SO4 + 2NaOH = Na2SO4 + 2H2O (Now the whole chemical equation is balanced))
Balance Fe + Cl2 = FeCl3
2Fe + 3Cl2 = 2FeCl3
