C1 - Atoms Flashcards
What is the radius of an atom?
Around 0.1 nanometres (1x10^-10 m)
What charge does the nucleus have?
Positive as the nucleus contains neutrons and protons only
What is the radius of the nucleus?
Around 1x10^-14
How much as the nucleus’ mass is concentrated in the atom
Almost the whole mass
Where are the electrons located in an atom?
They orbit the nucleus
How can you determine the size of an electron?
The volume of their orbits
What is the relative mass of a proton?
+1
What is the relative mass of a neutron?
1
What is the relative mass of an electron?
Very small (taken as 0 or 1/2000)
What is the charge for protons?
+1
What is the charge for neutrons?
0
What is the charge for electrons?
-1
What is the overall charge of atoms?
No charge overall(neutral) as the protons and electrons cancel out as they have the same amount
What is the difference between an ion and an atom?
With an ion,the amount of protons isnt equal to the number of electrons, meaning it has an overall charge. For example an ion with a 2- charge has two more electrons than protons
What does the nucleur symbol in an atom tell you about an atom?
It tells you the atomic(proton and electron) number and mass number
