C1:7 Alkanes and Alkenes Flashcards
What is the general formula for alkanes?
C(n)H(2n+2) where n stands for the number of carbon atoms.
What is the general formula for alkenes?
C(n)H(2n) where n stands for the number of carbon atoms.
name the first 4 Alkanes
methane
ethane
propane
butane
name the first 3 Alkenes
ethene
propene
butene
What are hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are compounds that contain only hydrogen and Carbon atoms.
What do - and = mean in displayed formula?
- is the symbol for a single bond and = is the symbol for a double bond.
In Alkanes what type of bond joins carbon atoms together?
Covalent bonds.
What is the difference in colour when bromine is added to an alkene as opposed to an alkane.
When bromine is added to an Alkane, it remains colourless.
When bromine is added to ankene, it changes from colourless to orange.
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a shared pair of electrons.
Are Alkanes and Alkenes saturated?
Alkanes are saturated because they contain only single covalent bonds between their carbon atoms. Alkenes are unsaturated because they contain a double covalent bond between two of their carbon atoms.
What is the reaction between bromine and an alkene called?
an Addition reaction.
