C1:6 Air pollution Flashcards
C1:6 Air pollution
Describe a simple carbon cycle involving respiration, combustion and photosynthesis.
Plants absorb Carbon dioxide from the Atmosphere.
They then releases it back into the atmosphere during respiration.
Animals consume Plants and so take on Carbon.
These animals then respire Carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.
Also Plants and animals die and eventually form fossil fuels. We burn these and so put Carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.
What are the products of Respiration?
Carbon dioxide and water
What is global warming caused by?
A situation where the release of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is greater than the process that removes it.
Why does deforestation have an impact on Global warming?
It means there is less biomass which is photosynthesizing and so more carbon is released into the atmosphere than removed out of, increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
What are pollutants?
Pollutants are substances released into the environment that may damage living things.
What happens to Nitrogen and oxygen when mixed inside an engine?
They react to produce mono-nitrogen oxides. (NOx)
What do Fossil fuels naturally contain small amounts of?
Sulphur
What do sulfur compounds form when burnt in car engines?
Sulfur dioxide
What does sulfur dioxide form when it dissolves in clouds?
Acid rain.
Mono-nitrogen oxides react with other atmospheric pollutants, particularly in sunlight to form…
photochemical smog.
Write the word equation for carbon monoxide being converted into carbon dioxide with a catalytic converter.
2carbon monoxide + 2nitrogen oxide ==>nitrogen + 2carbon dioxide.
How does photochemical smog form
Mono-nitrogen oxide react with atmospheric pollutants in sunlight.
