What are cosmetics?
Cosmetics are substances used to change a person’s appearance or smell for the better.
Name the two general types of substances which are used to make cosmetics?
natural and syntheitic
Name the 5 properties that a perfume needs to be successful
Evaporates easily
Non-toxic
Does not react with water
Does not irritate the skin
Insoluble in water
What is volatility?
Volatility is a measure of how easily a liquid evaporates.
What are Esters?
Esters are compounds with pleasant smells. They are used in perfumes.
How do you make an Ester?
You react an Alcohol with an organic acid such as methanoic acid. In general:
alcohol + acid–> ester + water
What are to conditions required for the reaction to make an ester take place?
some concentrated sulfuric acid is added(to act as a catalyst) and the mixture is heated to 60 degrees.
Ethanol + ethanoic acid==>?
Ethanol + ethanoic acid==> ethyl ethanoate + water
