Name some things a doctor can do when initiating a consultation
Greet the patient, introduce yourself, demonstrate interest, confirm patient’s name and DOB, start with open ended questions
Name some communication behaviours which show active listening
Allowing the patient to finish their sentences, not interrupting, maintaining eye contact, nodding while the patient is talking, having an open body language, making an interim summary
Name some negative communication behaviours and explain how they might influence a consultation
Asking multiple questions may lead to the patient only answering one of the questions and giving less information.
Not expanding or asking about the patient’s worries may mean information is missed.
Not empathising with the patient- patient may feel less comfortable
Leading questions- can be bias and judgmental and lead to inaccurate information being elicited

How can you ask about the patient’s ideas?
‘Is there anything you think might be causing these symptoms?’
‘Tell me about what you think is causing it.’
‘What do you think might be happening?’
‘Have you any ideas about it yourself?’
How can you ask about the patient’s concerns?
Do you have any concerns about your illness?
Are you worried about your symptoms?
Is there anything you’re worried about?
How can you ask about the patient’s expectations?
‘What were you hoping we might be able to do for this?’
‘What do you think might be the best plan of action?’
‘How might I best help you with this?’
What can failure to acknowledge ICE lead to?
It can negatively impact on information gathering resulting in inaccurate diagnoses and reduced patient satisfaction

How might you close a consultation with a patient?
Provide an end summary, discuss and action plan, check for further information, ask the patient if they have any other questions, check is the patient has any other worries
Why is ICE important?
Makes the consultation patient centred and addresses the main needs of the patient
